The Gap Project Newsletter April 2026 - 14 Apr 2026

News and Updates

Gap in the Media

Over the past few months, the Gap Project has had some exciting opportunities to share our work with new local audiences. The March edition of the Thanet Community Ad Magazine featured an article about the Gap Community Café and its origins, you can read it on their website, Issue 83, p12. Our intern, Jo, also appeared on the Broadstairs Life podcast (available online), helping to promote our upcoming fundraising events. We are continuing to grow our reach across Thanet through Facebook groups and Instagram collaborations. If you don’t already follow us, why not stay up to date and connect with us today?

Community Champions Award

On Wednesday 28th January, the Gap Project was honoured to receive the Thanet Community Champions Award. This award recognises individuals and organisations who go above and beyond to support their communities. The event celebrated the inspiring work taking place across Thanet and left us feeling hopeful about the future. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, staff, trustees, partners, and the wider community. This award reflects your dedication, kindness, and continued support.

Pancakes and Pyjamas

We hosted a Pancakes and Pyjamas party during the half-term holiday, 17th February, offering families a fun and relaxed morning. Children (and parents!) were invited to come straight from home in their pyjamas and enjoy a special breakfast together. The session included pancake-themed crafts and activities, along with pancakes served with a variety of toppings, from fruit to sweet treats. The morning ended with a themed Peppa Pig video and was a great success, helping to build momentum for the following Easter themed Family Café.

Gap in the Market Fashion Show

On 30th January, Gap in the Market hosted a sold-out fashion show showcasing clothing available in the shop. The auditorium was transformed for the evening, with compère Chris Matthewman guiding the event as a diverse group of volunteer models took to the stage. The audience enjoyed a lively and entertaining evening, with plenty of laughter, especially during a memorable appearance by Tony Budden, the new shop manager, modelling a selection of eclectic wigs. The event successfully raised funds for the GAP Project through ticket sales, purchases, and refreshments from the bar. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one!

The Book Swap Shelf

The Gap Community Café now features a Book Swap Shelf, where customers can bring a book they’ve finished and exchange it for a new one. The initial collection of literature was generously donated by Gap in the Market, and we’re excited to see it grow. We are always looking for new ways to engage our café community. Why not come along, enjoy some lunch, and pick up your next read?

Spotlight on Parents & Toddlers

Our Parents and Toddlers group offers a warm and friendly environment where parents (or guardians/carers) and children can enjoy playtime, crafts, singing and refreshments together. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to develop social and early learning skills while parents connect with others in a relaxed and supportive setting. If you are interested in coming along please get in touch, we would love to have you join us!

Upcoming Events

As grant funding becomes increasingly limited, we are exploring new and creative ways to raise the vital funds needed to sustain the work of the Gap Project. We have an exciting program of fundraising events coming up over the next year, over the next few months join us for: Taco Quiz Night- 24th April; Tabletop Sale- 23rd May and 25th Anniversary Garden Party- 20th June. Further details can be found on our website, we would love for you to get involved with these events.

Get Involved: Fundraising

In this edition of the newsletter, we’d love to encourage you to get involved by supporting the Gap Project through fundraising. Josh Attwell ran the Paris Marathon and has raised over £1,500, and the young people at Queens Road Baptist Church are creatively “growing a pound” to raise funds through a variety of initiatives. Some individuals sell bracelets and recycled cards.

If you’d like to help, you could take on a sponsored challenge, organize an event, or sell crafts and bakes. You might also consider fundraising as a group with friends, colleagues, or your school community. Whatever you choose, we’re here to support you, including helping set up a JustGiving page and promoting your efforts.
